Pro Tip: Serrations are the saw-like projections on the blade of a knife or cutting tool. A serrated cutting edge increases the points of contact with the material being cut. This type of blade edge also increases the angles on these points of contact which makes cutting and ripping much faster and more efficient than cutting with a plain edge blade. Serrations must be sharpened differently than plain edges. Each “tooth” (serration point) must be sharpened individually which requires another type of sharpening tool. On a blade with a combination edge, serrated parts of a blade will not require sharpening as frequently as the plain edge portion would.
